"Fifth Avenue Bar": A Candy-inspired Piece

Poetry usually isn't an area that I explore often, with my niche being in the areas of fiction and creative nonfiction. But, there are times when I am inspired to churn out a piece of poetry. Such inspiration can hit anywhere and anytime. For example, I was browsing the candy aisle at a local Walgreens and imagining what I could do with all those funky names of candy on those shelves.


This poem is the product of that inspirational moment. I wrote this back in high school, and only recently rediscovered it among my files of writing projects. Now, let's hit the candy store and fill a bucket or two, shall we?

"Fifth Avenue Bar"

OH HENRY,
It's PAY DAY!
Let's go to the
FIFTH AVENUE bar
With SUGAR DADDY a-playin'
And BABY RUTH
and the AIRHEADS too.
Let's all sit at CLARK'S BAR,
The bell on the door
Going DING-DONG.
You're gonna order
an IDAHO SPUD
And I'm gonna have a
WHOPPER of a burger.
The THREE MUSKETEERS
have arrived, weary,
From arresting a couple
of JOLLY RANCHERS.
A child is cryin' for her
GUMMI BEAR named HERSHEY.
Hey, KIT KAT, bring
out the colas.
We cheer to ALMOND JOY's
wedding and how the
M&Ms returned home
safely from YORK and ZAGUNTY
with just UNO misadventure.
The MOUNDS of cracked nut shells
lay on the bar counter
beneath the ceiling made
to look like STARBURSTS
reflected upon the WHATCHAMACALLIT.
The SNICKERS coming from the corner
where TWIX and REESE'S gang sits,
chatting and drinking LICORICE juice,
and munching on the GOOBERS.
The BIG HUNKs at the pool table,
blowing RAZZIES as they gamble away
their 100 GRANDS while their
SWEETARTS (sweethearts) look on.
The champs are gloatin' over
BULL's EYES on the dartboard.
In another corner, the NERDS and the SMARTIES
in front of their laptops, flicking BOTTLECAPS
at the PEPPERMINT PATTIES singin' on the stage,
while the RED HOT gals are dancin' the night away.
OH HENRY,
It's PAY DAY,
Let's all go to
FIFTH AVENUE bar
for some NUTRAGEOUS fun!
