Sign Language in a Upcoming Marvel "Avengers" Comic
I read about this on Facebook recently:
ArtsBeat, a blog of the New York Times, shares a posting: "One of Marvel's Avengers Turns to Sign Language". In reading the article, I discovered that an Marvel Avenger superhero turns to sign language after sustaining battle injuries.
Excerpt from article:
"The story strives to connect readers with what he is experiencing: when he can't hear, the word balloons on the page are blank. The comic also makes extensive use of sign language, but provides no key to interpreting them. "If nothing else, it's an opportunity for hearing people to get a taste of what it might be like to be deaf," Mr. Fraction said."
Read the rest of the article here: (Link: http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/07/24/one-of-marvels-avengers-turns-to-sign-language/?_php=true&_type=blogs&smid=tw-share&_r=0 )
The writer credits the idea of using sign language for the character comes from experience of teaching his children sign at a young age. In drawing the comic, he turned to Rachel Coleman of Signing Time, for consultation.
Got to wait until July 30 to read the comic and see the handiwork for ourselves.
Are there any other superhero comics that use sign language? Share them here!
AWESOME!!! "The comic also makes extensive use of sign language, but provides no key to interpreting them. "If nothing else, it's an opportunity for hearing people to get a taste of what it might be like to be deaf," Mr. Fraction said.""
